Origin: The history behind Mages, humans with the ability to perform feats of magic that defy the laws of science and nature, has been shrouded in mystery since the dawn of time. They go by many names: Shamans, Witchdoctors, Sorcerers/Sorceresses, Alchemists, Wizards, and Spellcasters to name a few. Whatever section of magic that they classify in, humans that dabble in the arts of magic are considered overall as witches for females and warlocks for males. Since the beginning of mankind’s existence, there have been humans with the capability to perform incredible feats of power that set them apart from normal humans. In early times, these Mages were worshipped as gods for their abilities to manipulate the elements of nature, rain down destruction on early settlements, or inflict seemingly divine wrath upon individuals that spite them. As such, these covens of powerful humans were worshipped in many regions as gods. Ranging from the Olympian/Roman Gods of Greece and Rome, the Norse Gods of Scandanavia, the Gods of Egypt, and many other deities throughout the world. These powerful beings were said to have originally been humans before being blessed with their Divine powers, in order to fight against a great and terrible force of nature. Throughout history, the stories have ranged from this fight being against mythical Titans from the past to giant wolves, and worlds Serpents at the end of time. The truth behind their origins, being lost in the ever fading memory of time, itself. Destined to be lost by all, except those old enough to remember the truth.
Types of Mages:
Nexus: Nexuses are Magical Leylines are areas on earth that emit a powerful focus of magical energies. Scattered throughout the world, magical beings covet these magical points, as they amplify a user’s power beyond their regular measures. Often, Clerics build shrines on these focal points so as to further boost their own magical energies, whereas other Mages are capable of linking their source of power to one, to also further their own abilities. These Nexus points can also restore power to a Wizard’s power source.
Covens: Like vampires, Mages also exist in Covens around the world, albeit most on a smaller scale than what vampires are used to. Some exist as families, while others exist as a group of Mages coming together, but in either case, Mages are always more powerful if they are part of a Coven. There are rumors of covens rising around the world, consisting of Mages, claiming to be the reincarnations of the first that walked among them with incredible power. However, such rumors have yet to be made to light.
Weaknesses: Although powerful, every Mage exhibit one potential flaw: They are still human. Each is susceptible to sickness, old age and injury in the same sense as humans. Although, through the use of magic, these things are often considered not a threat to more powerful and experienced users of magic, but should a Mage ever lose their connection to their power source, then they are as vulnerable as the next human to whatever harm befalls them next as long as they are not linked to magic. Even Innates are susceptible to losing their power. Although difficult, the ways are many and very possible in order to render Mage of their power. In some cases, stripping them of their power has sometimes resulted in the Mage's immediate death.
Types of Mages:
- Wizards: Mages that are students in the art of spellcasting, who utilize their spells through a wand, staff, or any enchanted jewelry. While most wizards can only vocally will their spells, older and more experienced wizards can will their spells through the power of their mind.
- Clerics: Mages that typically get their power from devoted worship to a powerful higher being, whether it be demon, angel, fae, god or goddess. These beings can be good, or evil, and depending on whom they worship, the constant rituals required to obtain and keep their power could vary from simple dances and chanting, to multiple human sacrifices. Often priests are considered Clerics but are not limited to only priests.
- Druids: Mages that are blessed with powers from the planet, itself. Druids can “speak” to the planet, and receive their powers through runic knowledge. With this knowledge, they can harness the power of the elements, and potentially even the power of the cosmos within time.
- Warlocks: Often, Warlocks attempt to manipulate other mage-like abilities through the use of gathered knowledge and stolen runic artifacts. They’re often the darker population of mages, and will often do what they can in the quest for more magical knowledge and power.
- Sorcerers: Unlike other mages, these beings are often born with magic within their blood, and are thus capable of performing magic quite proficiently. They do not need to worship a deity, nor be at one with the planet, or even need a magical object in order to practice magic. It is said that these are beings that are blessed by the gods.
- Shaman: Shaman are mages who are gifted with the ability to commune with the dead. They possess power over the soul and can perform magic pertaining to the dead. Unlike Mages who deal in Arcane, they do not have to deal with consequences as they can expend a soul to fuel their magic. For a Shaman the soul has to be willing to be used in a spell but that rule changes when a Shaman is corrupted into a Necromancer. A Necromancer is a Shaman who can manipulate the souls of both the mortal dead and the demonic essence but has been corrupted by that very essence. They are a very practical people and unlike many other Magi they will work with any species if the price is right or the cause is equally just.
